This week, students took part in an engaging and thoughtful activity inspired by the book Recess Queen by Alexis O’Neill. After listening to the story, students discussed its key elements, including character traits, setting, and the message of friendship and inclusion.
Building on the story’s theme, students reflected on how they could be “recess friends” instead of “recess queens,” writing down their own ideas for kindness and fair play during recess.
To bring their learning to life, students then collaborated to design inclusive playgrounds using everyday craft materials like paper towel rolls, pipe cleaners, popsicle sticks, and straws. The creative project encouraged teamwork, problem-solving, and empathy—turning a story into a powerful lesson in how to make playtime welcoming for everyone.
