One thing we love doing at South Harrison is recognizing the hard work, dedication and outstanding success of both our students and staff. And today, we have some academic accomplishments needing to be celebrated. During the 2022-2023 school year, SHCSC juniors and seniors passed 45 AP exams with a score of 3 or higher.
Overall, there were 56 students taking AP exams between eight courses SHCSC offers. Six of these courses are offered in-person and two are virtual through Indiana Online Academy. In total, students had a pass rate of 57% on their exams and were taught by some of our most experienced teachers:
- Mr. Alan Mathews teaching AP Spanish;
- Mrs. Micky Miller teaching AP Government;
- Dr. William Royalty teaching AP Biology;
- Mrs. Sabrina Schreck teaching AP Language Arts;
- Mrs. Tiffany Stansbury teaching AP Literature; and
- Mrs. Carol Vaughn teaching AP Physics.
AP, or Advanced Placement, exams are cumulative assessments students take at the end of their Advanced Placement courses as a way to earn credit from colleges or universities. Slightly different from dual credit courses offered by Indiana University or Ivy Tech Community College, students taking AP courses must pass the exam with a score of 3 or higher to earn college credit and have it count as a course at the university they are attending.
With a growing number of South Harrison students taking AP exams, we’re thankful for the Harrison County Community Foundation for covering the cost of exam fees, making the tests free for students wanting to earn college credit. Some students hoping to attend college out of state or be directly admitted into a specific university program may choose to take more AP courses, as a passing score on the exam may carry more significance in the college application process.
Students receive a score on a range from 5 to 1, with a 5 equalling extremely well qualified, 3 being qualified and 1 as not recommended. According to the College Board, “qualified” indicates if a student has proven they are capable of doing the necessary work of a college-level introductory course in a particular subject.
Congratulations to all the South Harrison students, their teachers and parents who worked to help our students succeed! Eight students received special distinction awards from the College Board for their AP test scores.
Anthony Clark, Liberty Enlow, Alex Harmon, Cody Miller, Keaton Spray, MaKayla Stewart and Hallie Yonkers were each named AP Distinguished Scholars. This means they received an average score of at least 3 on all AP Exams taken and scored 3 or higher on four exams.
Taylor Perry also received the AP Distinguished Scholar with Honors award. To earn this, Taylor received an average score of at least 3.25 on all AP Exams taken and scored 3 or higher on five or more of these exams.
